Fair Skin Tanning Tips

Are you looking to trade in that milk jug white skin for a little peachy golden glow or touch of brown? And you’d like to avoid being the red beet that shows up at the salad bar this weekend? I am going to walk you through some safe successful steps to getting that bit of brown you are hungering for.

Exfoliate

First, let’s exfoliate. Lizards are not the only creatures that need to shed a few outer layers. The color that you get while tanning is a result of the skin reacting to the sun. Exfoliating removes the outer layer of dry, dead skin that could otherwise create splotchy tanning.

Be sure to lightly scrub you skin, as you do not want to damage your new skin underneath. Consider using a loofah to exfoliate your skin or my all-time favorite is using a sea salt scrub that is oil based (jojoba or almond oil are good ingredients to look for). The salt scrubs away the dead skin and the natural oils leave your skin very rich in moisture.

Tanning Salon

Next, for the faired skinned doll or guy, I recommend going to a tanning bed for several brief sessions. You can wear a tan through swimsuit to tan your entire body. Start with ONLY a 5 minute session. Be sure to wear tanning eye goggles to protect your eyes. For fair skinned people I recommend ONLY 2 five minute sessions per week for 2 consecutive weeks, then increase tan time to 6 minutes twice a week for another 2 weeks. At this point you can get some outdoor sun or increase your tanning bed time by 1 minute more a week. No more than 2 visits to tanning bed a week though.

Note: Space these weekly sessions out by 3 days. This slow and steady tanning will make it a very gradual tan and you will be much less likely to burn. This is a nice way to get a base peachy golden tan so you can spend time outdoors with a nice suntan lotion that will keep you from burning.

Hit the Beach!

For fair skinned people, start with SPF 15 or more, if your skin is lighting. If you have naturally dark/ easy to tan skin an SPF rating of 10 will most likely work for you.

You need to apply suntan lotion at the beginning because you don’t want to expose your skin to the full power of the sun’s rays. Instead, do so gradually, over a period of a few days. Getting a great tan means gently exposing your skin. The tan will also last longer a, without being shocked with a sunburn.

For your outdoor tanning you only need to tan for one or two hours a day. Numerous hours are not necessary nor advised for fair skinned people. What keeps that touch of brown going? Simple: consecutive days of tanning – NOT boiling in the sun from daylight to dark! Be sure to remember to flip every 15 minutes to half hour for even tanning.

Moisturize

Apply after your shower in the morning, after your hour or two sun tanning on the beach (take another shower first to get rid of lotions and sweat), and again before you go to bed at night. If your skin is moist, your skin will appear more radiant. (I recommend Philosophy Lotions – they are very rich in natural oils).

Although you are not a sponge, it would be a good idea to pretend you are. Water, water, water! Your body and your largest organ (your skin) loves water. Remember, tanning is actually your skin’s defense against UV rays, so it takes a lot of energy producing melanin pigment to darken your skin. Constantly drinking water is the best way to rehydrate your skin cells and flush out toxins. Besides, in the hot sun, you’ll need to drink anyway. So do yourself and your skin a favor – all through the day.

Keep in mind, if you are going to be out all day in the sun at an event or activity – apply a strong SPF (SPF 30 or greater) to avoid making that pretty peachy brown color HOT RED!

But most importantly of all, let us all take a lesson in the following excerpt I read just last week.

SUNTAN FUNNY of the week:

Vacation time was suntan time as far as Jenn, was concerned, and she spent almost all of her day on the roof of her hotel sopping up the warm sun’s rays. She wore a bathing suit the first day, but on the second, she decided that no one could see her way up there and she slipped out of it for an overall tan. She’d hardly begun when she heard someone running up the stairs; she was lying on her stomach, so pulling a towel over her derriere, she continued to recline as before.

“Excuse me, miss,” said the flustered little assistant manager of the hotel, out of breath from running up the stairs. “The Hotel Plaza doesn’t mind your sunning on the roof, but we would very much appreciate your wearing your bathing suit as you did yesterday.”
“What difference does it make?” Joan asked rather coolly. “No one can see me up here and besides, I’m covered with a towel.”

“Not exactly,” said the embarrassed, little man. “You’re lying on the dining room skylight.”

Note to self: Be careful where you park your suntan lotion!
